Khaberni - Experts have long advised avoiding electronic devices before bed, staying away from caffeine, and maintaining a consistent number of sleep hours as basic methods to combat insomnia.
Now, studies suggest that bathing in dim lighting may also help calm the body and mind before sleep.
Dr. Allie Herr, a sleep medicine consultant at Royal Brompton Hospital, said: "Studies have shown that taking a warm bath before bed can improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. This is linked to the lowering of the body's core temperature, which is a natural signal for the onset of sleep. Dim light also helps in the secretion of the hormone melatonin, which enhances relaxation and calm before sleep."
She added: "Soft music can also help calm the mind, although some people find the sound of water alone to be comforting enough."
Dr. Claire Romes, head of insomnia treatment at Boots online clinic, said: "Bathing in dim light alone will not solve chronic sleep problems, but it can be an important part of a relaxing bedtime routine."
This practice has been famous for years among health experts, who consider it a way "to cleanse negative energy and prepare for nighttime rest or intimate relationships."
Recently, bathing in the dark has gained popularity on social media, where many have shared its benefits. In one TikTok video viewed by more than 12,000 people, a user said: "One way I reset my nervous system as a stay-at-home mom is by bathing in the dark."
