The Egyptian Attorney General, Counselor Mohamed Shawky, has agreed to remove the name of the Egyptian-British political activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah from the travel ban lists, based on a request submitted by his lawyer.
This decision comes just a few months after Abd El-Fattah was released in September, following a presidential pardon issued by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, which included him and others, in case number 1228/2021 misdemeanor state security, accused of broadcasting and publishing false news and statements inside and outside the country.
Abd El-Fattah, one of the prominent figures of the 2011 revolution, had spent many years in prison on political charges related to demonstrating and spreading false news, before being included in the latest presidential amnesty decisions aimed at releasing detainees in similar cases.
Despite his release, Abd El-Fattah faced restrictions on his freedom of movement as he was prevented from traveling to the UK to meet his son last November.
The new decision by the Attorney General is seen as a positive step towards removing all remaining restrictions, in line with the general direction of the state towards expanding the scope of releases and amnesty for prisoners of conscience.
