The police chief of the Hojai district in Assam, India, said that 7 elephants were killed and another was injured when a train heading to Delhi collided with a herd of elephants.
A statement issued by the Northeast Frontier Railway stated that the accident site in the Hojai area is not a designated elephant crossing.
The company stated that the train driver used the emergency brakes upon seeing the herd, but the elephants charged towards the train.
According to the statement, the collision that occurred at 2:17 AM today (2047 GMT Friday) resulted in the derailment of the locomotive and five train cars, but no people were injured.
The railway said, "Trains scheduled to pass through this section are being diverted to another line. Restoration work is underway."
