The German Endocrine Society has warned that children's toys, such as plastic toys, stuffed dolls, and electronic devices, may contain substances that affect the hormonal system.
The society explained that substances that affect hormones can influence hormonal functions even in small amounts, leading to disorders in the endocrine glands.
These substances include, for example:
- Phthalates
- Bisphenols
- Brominated flame retardants
- PFAS compounds, also known as "forever chemicals"
- Heavy metals
- Pesticide residues
The society noted that children’s skin barrier and mucous membranes are not fully developed, allowing these substances to disrupt natural hormone signals in the body even in very small amounts, negatively impacting growth, metabolism, development, and fertility.
Preventive Measures
To prevent these serious health risks, parents should buy high-quality toys, which are less contaminated.
It is also important to be cautious of strong odors, as one should stay away from toys that emit a strong chemical smell.
It's also important to air out new toys, allowing them to sit outside for a few days. It's also advisable to wash stuffed dolls.
