FIFA determined the fate of the third-place playoff in the Arab Cup between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which was cancelled earlier today due to heavy rainfall in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The organizing committee of the Arab Cup decided to cancel the Saudi Arabia versus UAE match for the third place, after the second half was postponed due to intense rainfall.
FIFA wrote in an official statement: «Following the suspension and subsequent cancellation of the third-place match in the Arab Cup between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and in accordance with FIFA's regulations and statutes, the FIFA Men's National Teams Committee has decided as follows: The match is declared a goalless draw (0-0), and the third place is shared between the two teams, with the financial prizes allocated for the third and fourth places being combined and distributed equally between the participating teams».
The first half of the match ended in a goalless draw, and the second half did not commence due to heavy rainfall.
Qatari media sources reported that referees asked to resume the match after a pause, but both technical teams refused the request.
FIFA clarified in a statement earlier today «Although the stadium maintained its full operational safety and the pitch remained in good condition, the referee and match officials took this measure to ensure the safety of all players, fans, and staff at the stadium».
