Death of Sudanese Music Icon Abdel Qader Salem at Age 79

Khaberni - Sudanese artist Abdel Qader Salem, one of the foremost pillars of art and traditional music in Sudan, has died at the age of 79 after a long battle with illness, following a decades-long artistic career filled with artistic and academic contributions in the fields of singing and music research. He played a prominent role in documenting Sudanese music and its cultural heritage.

His son announced his father's death this Tuesday morning through a video shared on social media platforms in Sudan, mentioning that the deceased will be buried in Hamad al-Nil cemetery in the city of Omdurman, where he will be laid to rest amidst a large gathering of his fans and relatives.

According to local media, the late artist spent his last days in the capital, Khartoum, after returning to his home in the Revolution neighborhood in Omdurman, at the end of 2024, following a treatment journey abroad.

Abdel Qader Salem is considered one of the most prominent figures in Sudanese music since the 1970s, known as a singer and composer, and his name is associated with the documentation of Sudanese traditional music, presenting it to both local and international audiences in an innovative way.

Abdel Qader Salem was born in 1946, where he endeavored to highlight Sudanese musical heritage and present it to audiences in modern formats, making him a fundamental reference in this field.
