Khaberni - A US official informed reporters today, Monday, that Ukraine will receive security guarantees similar to those outlined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty under a peace agreement discussed in Berlin.
New Guarantees
During a group call with reporters after two days of peace talks between the United States and Ukraine, officials stated that these guarantees would not be extended indefinitely.
One official also mentioned that Russia is open to Ukraine joining the European Union, and that President Donald Trump wants to prevent Russia from advancing further towards the west.
Meanwhile, another senior White House official reported today, Monday, that US President Donald Trump is satisfied with the progress of the Ukraine talks taking place in Berlin.
He added to "Al Arabiya/Al Hadath" that the talks made significant progress regarding security guarantees for Ukraine.
He also pointed to an American belief that Russia will accept the security guarantees in the final deal, emphasizing that Trump is focused on preventing Russia’s expansion to the west of Ukraine.
In turn, US President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the talks with America in Berlin were not easy, but they were nevertheless fruitful.
He continued during a speech at the German-Ukrainian Forum saying, "The talks with the American side were complex and not easy, but we made progress."
After that, the head of the Ukrainian delegation participating in the negotiations with America announced today, Monday, that the talks had made good progress.
Rustam Umierov, Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council wrote, "Over the past two days, the Ukrainian-American negotiations have been constructive and fruitful, achieving real progress."
The chief Ukrainian negotiator continued, "The American team, led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, has been working very constructively to help Ukraine find a path to a lasting peace agreement," according to Reuters.
An official familiar with the talks explained that the American negotiators are still insisting on Kyiv relinquishing the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk (east) collectively known as Donbas, as a condition for peace talks with Russia.
The official continued, saying that Russian President Vladimir "Putin wants land... and the United States demands that Ukraine withdraw from the two regions, but it has not agreed to this request," according to Agence France-Presse.
He expressed surprise that "the Americans are adopting the Russian stance on this issue," according to his statement.
This information came after the Ukrainian delegation met again in Berlin, headlined by the envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, after negotiations lasted five hours yesterday, Sunday.
Kyiv hoped to convince Washington of the need to cease fire without making prior territorial concessions to Moscow.
Difficult Negotiation Round
While Witkoff did not provide many details yesterday, he confirmed via the platform "X" that "significant progress was made during in-depth discussions on a 20-point peace plan, economic programs, and others."
Meanwhile, an official familiar with Sunday's round described it as "difficult," especially since the issue of security guarantees and land concessions are considered thorny issues.
Note that the requested guarantees are inspired by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which stipulates mutual protection among member states, but without Ukraine joining NATO, a matter that the Ukrainian authorities aspire to.
