Khaberni - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Al-Safadi received a phone call on Monday from the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini.
Al-Safadi affirmed the significant humanitarian role that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is playing in Gaza, which continues to face a humanitarian disaster due to the destruction caused by the Israeli aggression and the ongoing Israeli restrictions on the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid and the imposition of unlawful restrictions on UN organisations, especially UNRWA.
Al-Safadi and Lazzarini also emphasized the importance of the UN General Assembly's decision to adopt the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice regarding the obligations of Israel, the occupying power, concerning the presence and activities of the United Nations and international organizations in the occupied Palestinian territories, facilitating aid and relief programs, including those provided by UNRWA, and ensuring that such assistance is not prevented from reaching its destination. They further highlighted the importance of the UN General Assembly's decision to extend UNRWA's mandate for an additional three years.
Al-Safadi stressed the need for regional and international efforts to support the agency, which plays an irreplaceable role and cannot be substituted by any other entity; to enable it to continue providing its vital services to Palestinian refugees in its five areas of operation, in accordance with its UN mandate.
Al-Safadi renewed the Kingdom's condemnation of the Israeli forces' raid on the UNRWA headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem; a flagrant violation of international law, the sanctity of the United Nations premises, and an unacceptable escalation.
