South Korean Prosecution Accuses Former President of Conspiring to Eliminate Opposition

Khaberni - Today, Monday, the South Korean prosecution accused former president Yoon Suk Yeol of trying to provoke North Korea into launching a military aggression against his country to justify the declaration of martial law in December 2024, and then to eliminate political opponents.

The special prosecutor Jo Eun Suk clarified in a press briefing that his team has charged 24 individuals—including Yoon and 5 members of his government—due to allegations of their involvement in a rebellion during his six-month investigation.

He stated that his team concluded that the former president had started preparations to impose martial law by or before October 2023, more than a year prior to his failed attempt in December 2024.

The special prosecutor added that his team confirmed that Yoon and his then-minister of defense had concocted a plan dating back to October 2023 aimed at suspending parliamentary powers and replacing it with an emergency legislative body.

He noted that to create a pretext for declaring martial law, they attempted to lure North Korea into committing an armed aggression, but they failed because Pyongyang did not respond militarily.

He explained that the prosecution is well aware from historical experiences that the justifications presented by those in power to justify a rebellion are merely a facade, with the sole aim being to monopolize power and maintain it.

The special prosecutor’s team previously charged Yoon and military leaders during his tenure with issuing orders to carry out a secretive drone operation over North Korea to escalate tensions between the two neighbors.
