Jordanian Identity The Strength of the Mountains the Warmth of the Desert and the Generosity of the Plains Together
Author: الدكتور زيد احمد المحيسن

Khaberni - Identity, that small word in its letters, big in meaning, is the cultural, psychological, and social vessel of a person, and it is the compass that directs the individual and the community in a changing world, full of challenges and openness to multiple cultures. When we talk about Jordanian identity, we speak of a cohesive entity, deeply rooted in the land, with characteristics evident in the history and culture of this ancient people.
It can be said without hesitation that a Jordanian's identity - has a Jordanian face, Arab depth, Islamic dimension, and a human spirit. Jordanians, the sons of this small-in-space but large-in-civilization and meaning nation, carry on their shoulders a historical legacy spanning from ancient civilizations, through the Islamic ages, to the modern state of Jordan that has formed a framework for national belonging that includes all its components.
The Jordanian identity is as solid as the mountains of Ajloun, Tafilah, and Balqa, firm and stable, demonstrating the resilience of the Jordanian person and their deep faith in their land. At the same time, it carries a spirit of generosity, ease, and hospitality like the plains of Madaba, Hawran, and Karak - the heir of our storied valleys, reflecting the Jordanians' generosity and love for others, and their embrace of human values in their daily interactions, whether with their fellow countrymen or guests from other nations.
The Jordanian identity is built on fundamental pillars. The Arabic language represents a tool for expression and communication, and it preserves the people's memory and culture. As for Islam and Christianity, they form the values and principles that guide individual and collective behavior, such as tolerance, justice, and social solidarity. Jordan's history, with all its events and the experiences of its generations, forms the axis of belonging and national consciousness, giving the individual a sense of continuity and pride in their roots. Moreover, the culture, customs, and traditions are the mirror of the Jordanian spirit, visible in the local cuisine, folklore, national festivals, and celebrations of social and religious occasions.
The Jordanian identity is not complete without sincere national belonging, reflecting the Jordanian's loyalty to the state and its leadership, keeping the society cohesive in the face of challenges, and preserving the unity of the land and the people. From here, it can be said that the Jordanian identity is a harmonious blend of stability and flexibility, traditionalism and modernity, local belonging, and global human openness.
Losing this identity or its decline poses a real danger to society, leading to psychological loss, decline of values, and cultural assimilation in a rapidly changing global environment. Therefore, preserving the Jordanian identity and instilling it in the hearts is not just a cultural duty but an investment in the future of the nation and the security, stability, and peace of the society.
Ultimately, the Jordanian identity is not just a title or slogan, but a renewed life on a solid land, established values in the hearts of its people. It is the strength of the mountains, the warmth of the hearts, the generosity of hospitality, the antiquity of history, and the vision of the future. And it is, as we can say, the map of the Jordanian spirit, which makes him a balanced person between his roots, his culture, and his belonging. Proudly, our Jordanian identity has a Jordanian face, Arab depth and language, Islamic dimension, and human spirit and values.
