Kim Yo-Jong appeared, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, holding her smartphone in her right hand in a photo released by the Korean Central News Agency on December 14 at the opening ceremony of a hospital in Kosong Province, North Pyongan.
Although the name of the manufacturer is not visible in the photo, the phone appears to be part of the "Magic" series launched by Chinese company Honor, advertised as the thinnest foldable phone in the world.
However, the newspaper Choson Sinbo, the official paper of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, reports that North Korea also produces its own brand of smartphones.
In addition, it is known that there are many cases where smartphones produced by Chinese companies are supplied and sold inside North Korea under an OEM system.
According to the South Korean news agency "Yonhap," if the smartphone carried by Kim is imported from China, it would be a violation of United Nations sanctions imposed on North Korea, as UNSC Resolution 2397 prohibits the import and export of electronic devices to North Korea.
This is not the first time a foldable phone has been featured in photos published by North Korean media.
A foldable phone was placed on the table in front of leader Kim in a photo of him watching the launch of the Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile in July 2023.
A month before that, Hyon Song-wol, the deputy director of the Workers' Party of Korea was also recognized holding a foldable phone at a public meeting.
