Khaberni - The Cabinet agreed in its meeting, held on Sunday chaired by Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan, on the principles related to determining the school fees for non-Jordanian students, and decided on the actual cost recovery for their education in public schools, based on a recommendation from the Minister of Education.
Under the new principles, the actual costs of education for non-Jordanian students in public schools will be recovered as determined by the specialized committees in the Ministry of Education.
The decision excludes student categories from first to sixth grade, children of Jordanian women married to non-Jordanians, residents of the Gaza Strip in the Kingdom, and students registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, noting that refugee students not registered with the Commission can benefit from reduced fees if they register with the Commission.
According to the amendment, the financial cost per semester for a non-Jordanian student not included in the categories above is 300 dinars for all academic secondary education pathways, basic education from the seventh to tenth grade, in addition to vocational and technical education, while schooling is free for Jordanian students.
The number of non-Jordanian students studying in public schools from various nationalities is approximately 48,000 students, and the financial cost of their education in public schools is more than 38 million dinars annually. The decision will cover about 15,000 of these students, and will allow for the collection of approximately 9 million dinars annually from the included students (30% less than the actual cost for them), and will direct these funds to the Ministry of Education to improve the quality of education in public schools.
