Specialized Surgery to Remove Hydatid Cysts from a Childs Lungs at the University Hospital

Khaberni - The pediatric surgery team at the Jordan University Hospital managed to treat a rare case of a 9-year-old child suffering from large "hydatid cysts" in both lungs, through precise surgical interventions using thoracoscopy, in what is considered one of the few medically recorded cases.

According to the hospital's statement today, Sunday, the rarity of the case lies in that the "hydatid cysts" typically affect the liver and may later transfer to the lungs. However, having only the lungs involved, particularly in a multiple and massive manner on both sides, is extremely rare. The case was discovered without obvious symptoms by the consultant in pediatric respiratory and chest diseases, Dr. Inas Al-Ziyadneh, and her medical team.

Due to the complexity of the case and its anesthetic and surgical difficulties, the anesthesia team led by the consultant pediatric anesthesiologist Dr. Omar Ababneh provided advanced anesthetic care, which enabled the safe completion of two large and consecutive surgeries. The pediatric surgery team, headed by the consultant in pediatric laparoscopic surgery Dr. Raed Al-Taher, successfully performed both surgeries without complications, using thoracoscopy instead of traditional open chest surgery.

Al-Taher explained that pediatric laparoscopic surgeries are among the most precise surgeries and are only performed in limited centers that possess the specialized equipment and expertise. He noted that Jordan University Hospital was among the first local institutions to adopt this type of advanced surgeries for children in recent years.

The use of the scope and small surgical incisions helped in accelerating the child’s recovery after the first operation on the right lung, which allowed the second operation on the left lung to be carried out only about two weeks later, using the same technique. The child fully recovered and was discharged from the hospital in a record time, with medical follow-up lasting several months, confirming his return to normal life without any complications.

On his part, the general manager of the hospital, Dr. Nader Al-Basool, emphasized the hospital's commitment to providing the latest surgical and anesthetic technologies and intensive care methods, and attracting medical talents with global experience and distinguished academic credentials, enhancing its position as a leading medical center offering advanced health services on both local and regional levels.
