Guterres The United Nations will meet with both sides of the Sudanese conflict in Geneva

Khaberni - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced in a press interview on Thursday that both sides of the conflict in Sudan, the military and the Rapid Support Forces, will meet in Geneva without specifying a date for this anticipated meeting.

Guterres said, "We will hold meetings in Geneva with both sides to persuade both parties to respect international humanitarian law" as part of the efforts to end the ongoing war for two years in Sudan.

However, he did not place great hopes on achieving a breakthrough, adding "Let's be honest, we have faced many disappointments in Sudan."

The world's attention is focused on the war in Sudan, which drew international condemnation in October after reports of mass atrocities committed after the Rapid Support Forces took over the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur and the military's last stronghold in western Sudan, following a bitter 18-month siege.

Guterres also clarified that the United Nations has received promises to allow it access to the stricken city.

He said, "We have a promise that we will be allowed to go to El Fasher in the very near future."

The United Nations and human rights organizations have accused the Rapid Support Forces of committing atrocities after they took over El Fasher.

Guterres considered that "no one is behaving well" in the war in Sudan.

He continued, "But there is one party clearly committing atrocities of the worst kind, and that is the Rapid Support Forces."

Guterres was speaking from the Saudi capital Riyadh, where he met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday.

Hope was renewed for the possibility of putting an end to the cycle of violence in Sudan after US President Donald Trump last month stated that he would work to end the "horrific atrocities" in Sudan following a request from the Saudi Crown Prince to help stop the war.
