Amazon and Microsoft make huge investments in India focusing on artificial intelligence

Khaberni - The American Amazon group for online commerce announced today, Wednesday, that it will almost double its investments in India, in an effort to increase exports, create job opportunities, and invest in artificial intelligence in the world's most populous country.

Several global companies have announced significant investments this year in the South Asian nation, which is the fifth-largest economic power and is expected to surpass 900 million internet users.

The American company stated in a statement that "Amazon announced plans to invest more than 35 billion dollars in all its business operations in India until 2030, in addition to about 40 billion dollars it has already invested in the country".

It added that "this investment will focus on business expansion and on three strategic pillars: digitization driven by artificial intelligence, export growth, and job creation".

Amazon reminded that it has invested in digital and physical infrastructures, including transport networks, data centers, infrastructure for digital payment operations, and technology development.

The company's statement added that "the investment will create one million jobs, increase cumulative exports to 80 billion dollars and deliver artificial intelligence benefits to 15 million small businesses".

Amazon's senior official, Amit Agarwal, said "We look forward to continuing to play a role in driving growth in India".

Microsoft

It should be noted that Microsoft committed yesterday, Tuesday, to invest 17.5 billion dollars in artificial intelligence and cloud computing in India over four years, to support the growth of the emerging sector.

After meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, the CEO of the company, Satya Nadella, said the investment would focus on three main pillars: scale, skills, and sovereignty, which aligns with Modi's goal of building a comprehensive, large-scale ecosystem in the country for innovation in artificial intelligence.

Nadella wrote in a post on the site X, "To support the country's ambitions, Microsoft commits 17.5 billion dollars — our largest investment ever in Asia — to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities necessary for India's future that depends on artificial intelligence."

India, with a population of about 1.45 billion people, is attracting increasing attention from artificial intelligence leaders as a market and source of skills and data. In October, the co-founder of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, visited the country, and visits from both Jensen Huang, head of Nvidia, and Demis Hassabis, from Google DeepMind, are expected in the coming months.
