Rain floods displaced tents in Gaza

Khaberni - A low-pressure weather system hit the Gaza Strip, causing thousands of tents in displacement camps to flood due to heavy rain, amid calls to pressure Israel to allow the entry of fuel and tents to the besieged sector.

The rain transformed the tents into pools of water unsuitable for living or dwelling, exacerbating the crisis for these displaced individuals who lack the most basic necessities of life.

Palestinian media outlets published video clips showing the suffering of the displaced due to their tents flooding, with many calling on the international community to press Israel to allow the entry of more tents due to the cold weather.

Husni Muhanna, a spokesperson for the Gaza municipality, said that the municipality's ability to drain rainwater has decreased by 80%, and that the occupation has destroyed 90% of the water pumps in the sector.

Muhanna confirmed that the large amounts of debris in the streets of the city hinder the movement of crews and prevent the flow of rainwater towards the sewers, 40% of which were destroyed by the occupation.

He warned that the current low-pressure system poses a real danger to the lives of the displaced and residents due to the significant destruction of the infrastructure.

The Gaza Civil Defense had warned on Tuesday of a polar low-pressure system threatening hundreds of thousands of displaced families in the sector, and called on the world to intervene to save the residents suffering under the catastrophic humanitarian reality in the sector.

Major Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for the Civil Defense in Gaza, said that camps, shelter centers, and buildings at risk of collapse will be greatly damaged by the low-pressure weather system and could collapse, resulting in casualties.

He also warned that shelter camps located in low areas will be completely flooded and unable to accommodate the volumes of rainwater.

He said the situation will be extremely difficult in the sector where thousands have been killed due to the Israeli genocide and suffers from collapse on all levels. He appealed to the international community to take action for the entry of temporary homes into the sector.
