Researcher Warns Artificial Intelligence Could Destroy Humanity Within 100 Years

Khaberni - Roman Yampolskiy, a researcher specializing in artificial intelligence security, warns that the rapid development of this technology could threaten the future of humanity, indicating that the possibility of a catastrophic scenario occurring within the next 100 years could reach 99.9%.

Yampolskiy bases his warning on his observation that all current artificial intelligence systems lack adequate security guarantees, considering that future generations of these technologies may not solve the same fundamental problems.

According to the site "Express", he joins a list of experts concerned about the long-term risks of this technology.

Yampolskiy has recently released his latest book titled "Artificial Intelligence: Unexplainable, Unpredictable, Uncontrollable," which explains the fundamental risks of artificial intelligence, such as the difficulty in predicting its behaviors or understanding the reasons behind its decisions.

The book also addresses questions about who controls this technology and the unintended consequences of its use, with philosophical discussions on whether artificial intelligence can possess consciousness or personality.

On the other hand, other research shows less stringent estimates; a joint study between Oxford and Bonn Universities, involving the opinions of more than 2700 experts, estimated that the likelihood of human extinction resulting from artificial intelligence does not exceed 5%.

Researcher Katja Grace explains that most experts recognize the danger, but the disagreement lies in its exact size.

On the other hand, some prominent pioneers in the field have rejected the idea of total human extinction, such as Andrew Ng, co-founder of Google Brain, and researcher Yann LeCun, who saw that some exaggerated warnings might serve other purposes far from science.

Sam Altman, president of OpenAI, has sparked widespread controversy when he warned that artificial intelligence could eliminate a large number of jobs he described as "not real work," anticipating fundamental changes in the existing "social contract."

Altman stated in 2015 that: "It is more likely that artificial intelligence will lead to the end of the world, but before that, it will create great companies."
