Google Enters the Race of AIPowered Smart Glasses

Khaberni - Google has officially announced that it will release its first AI-powered smart glasses in 2026, marking a return to the wearable device market after its previous famous project, Google Glass, which was discontinued years ago.

This comes as part of the company’s strategy focusing on mixed reality and artificial intelligence, aiming to integrate the Gemini smart assistant directly into stylish and lightweight glasses that can be used in everyday life.

Two Categories of Glasses

Google revealed that it is developing two different types of smart glasses: the first without a screen, relying on voice and camera for user interaction, and the second with a display within the lens to present information in the appropriate context.

The screenless glasses come with a speaker, microphone, and integrated camera, allowing the user to speak to Gemini directly, take photos, and request assistance or information without needing a phone.

Meanwhile, the glasses with the screen inside the lens display useful data such as directions, instant translations, or alerts using augmented reality, making them useful while on the move or travelling.

Both models will be powered by Android XR, Google’s system for hybrid devices, and will be developed in collaboration with multiple companies including Samsung.

Google’s Objective

After the experience with Google Glass, which later faced numerous criticisms, Google says that advancements in artificial intelligence and the availability of better design standards make it possible today to offer practical and modern smart glasses.

The company points out that the goal is not just to introduce a new device, but to integrate artificial intelligence into our daily lives seamlessly, so that you don’t need to pull out your phone or enter apps; simply look at your glasses and get what you need.

This step comes amid escalating competition in the smart glasses market, with one of the main competitors being Meta through its current smart glasses. Google's entry with lightweight glasses and a modern design is important.

It should be noted that so far, Google has not displayed final models to the public, as the full specifications such as price, battery life, or exact launch date remain unannounced.
