Petra University has achieved a qualitative accomplishment by securing the fourth rank locally, and the 236th rank globally in the "Green Metric" (UI Green Metric) ranking of green universities for the year 2025. The university moved up more than twenty ranks in the global ranking, surpassing many academic institutions in a list that included 1,745 participating universities from around the world.
The president of Petra University, Professor Dr. Rami Abdel Rahim, said that the results enhance the university's international standing and reflect its firm commitment to global sustainability standards, adding that the university is steadily moving towards establishing the concept of a green campus, and is integrating environmental sustainability concepts into higher education in alignment with the sustainable development goals and enhancing its role in serving the community.
Abdel Rahim confirmed that the continuous progress for the fourth consecutive year, despite the significant increase in the number of participating universities and intense competition, places Petra University among the top environmentally friendly universities, and among the best 14% of universities globally.
The director of the Quality Assurance, Planning and Metrics Unit, Dr. Ahmed Al-Qasem, pointed out that the university scored 8,000 points in the total evaluation, an increase of 250 points over last year, indicating that this increase reinforced the university's position within the top quarter (Q1) of global universities in the ranking for the third year in a row.
The university excelled in the sub-criteria of the ranking, achieving the 113th rank globally in the education and research axis, and the 197th rank in the energy and climate change axis. These numbers reflect the university’s success in integrating sustainability concepts into its academic programs and research plans, and in developing its infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions.
It is noted that the "Green Metric" ranking is considered the most prominent global standard for measuring universities' commitment to environmental sustainability, and evaluates institutions based on six main criteria including infrastructure, energy, waste management, water, transportation, and education and research.
