Khaberni - The Moroccan authorities announced the death of 19 people and injury of 16 with varying degrees of severity following the collapse of two adjacent residential buildings in the city of Fez.
Local authorities in the city of Fez reported that the incident occurred early Wednesday morning in the Al Mustaqbal neighborhood of the urban area Al Masira, according to the official Moroccan news agency.
The authorities clarified that the buildings, each consisting of 4 floors and housing 8 families, collapsed suddenly, resulting in a large number of victims under the rubble.
Immediately after the incident, local authorities, security forces, and civil defense teams rushed to the scene, where extensive search and rescue operations began and lasted for hours, including securing the surroundings of the collapse site and evacuating residents of adjacent houses as a precautionary measure in fear of additional collapses.
The authorities said that the injured were transported to the University Hospital Center in Fez to receive necessary examinations and treatments, while rescue teams continue their efforts to search for possible survivors under the rubble until this moment.
The authorities have opened an investigation to determine the causes of the collapse of the buildings, in an incident officially described as "tragic".
