Scientists 2025 to Be the Second or Third Warmest Year on Record

Khaberni - The Copernicus Climate Change Service, affiliated with the European Union, said on Tuesday that this year is expected to be the second or third warmest year on record globally, likely surpassed only by 2024, which saw record-high temperatures.

This is the latest data issued by the service following the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which concluded last month without governments agreeing on new substantial measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reflecting a tension at the geopolitical level as the United States scales back its efforts and some countries aim to undermine carbon dioxide emission reduction measures.

The service mentioned in its monthly bulletin that this year is likely to complete the first three-year period in which the average global temperature exceeds 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels between 1850 and 1900 when humans began burning fossil fuels on an industrial scale.

Samantha Burgess, the climate chief at the service, said, "These milestone stages are not merely abstract, they reflect the accelerating pace of climate change."

Extreme weather phenomena continued to sweep through parts of the world this year. Last month, Typhoon Kalmegi killed more than 200 people in the Philippines, and Spain suffered its worst wildfires in three decades due to weather conditions which scientists confirm are more likely due to climate change.

Last year was the hottest ever on Earth.

Although natural weather patterns mean that temperatures fluctuate from year to year, scientists have documented a clear trend towards rising global temperatures over time, affirming that the primary reason for this increase is greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.

Earlier this year, the World Meteorological Organization stated that the last ten years have been the hottest since records began.
