An App Ignites Controversy Between Taipei and Beijing

Khaberni - In a surprising move that has sparked debate both inside and outside Taiwan, the authorities have decided to impose a one-year comprehensive ban on the famous app "Xiao Hong Shu," known as "Red Note," which is one of the most popular photo and content sharing platforms among the island's youth. The decision, which the government justified with security concerns and rising fraud crimes, has widely opened the door to political and media disputes, amidst mutual accusations between Taipei and Beijing about the real motives behind this unprecedented digital escalation.

According to the Chinese newspaper "Global Times," the Taiwanese Democratic Progressive Party justified the decision with concerns over "information security" and "rising fraud crimes."

The Taiwanese Ministry of Interior stated that the app has become a "high-risk platform," noting that over 1700 fraud cases associated with it were recorded during the year. However, the Chinese newspaper accused the Taipei government of double standards, especially since there are larger apps in terms of user numbers with higher fraud rates that have not faced similar penalties, deepening the suspicions about motives that go beyond the declared security concerns.

According to "China Daily," the Democratic Progressive Party is aiming to reduce the digital space that allows for extensive and unmonitored communication between Taiwanese youth and mainland China, especially after the app has become a main window for getting acquainted with modern Chinese culture.
