Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Monday, designating one of the largest organizations defending civil rights for Muslims in the United States as a "foreign terrorist organization," following a similar step taken by Texas last month.
The decision targets the Council on American-Islamic Relations "CAIR" in an executive order published by DeSantis on the social networking site X, and gives the same designation to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The US government has not classified both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations.
The order requests that Florida agencies prevent both groups and anyone who has provided them with material support from obtaining contracts, jobs, or funds from any executive agency or government department in the state.
In a statement via email, CAIR and its Florida branch said the organization plans to sue DeSantis in response to what the organization described as the "unconstitutional and defamatory announcement."
