When should surgery be considered for sinusitis treatment

Khaberni - The website "Aponet.de" stated that sinusitis usually occurs after catching a cold, where the mucous membrane in the sinuses becomes inflamed.

The site, which is the official portal for German pharmacists, explained that the face contains many air-filled cavities, noting that the sinuses include the maxillary sinuses, the frontal sinuses, the ethmoid sinuses, and the sphenoid sinuses.

These sinuses are connected to the nasal cavity through narrow passages, and are lined with a mucous membrane; if this membrane swells due to inflammation, the secretions cannot be properly drained, accumulating in the sinuses causing the usual compressive pain, which often worsens when bending over.

Nasal Obstruction

Symptoms of sinusitis include an increase in the thickness of nasal mucus, nasal obstruction, and mild facial pain, especially in the cheek area.

"Aponet.de" indicated that inhaling hot steam is a simple home treatment, as it moisturizes the mucous membranes and relieves pressure.

Decongestant Medications

Sinusitis can be treated with sprays or tablets that relieve congestion, as they help to drain the mucus and thereby improve breathing. However, these medications should be used for only a few days, and doctors recommend using sprays free from preservatives.

Pain relievers such as ibuprofen, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), diclofenac, and paracetamol (acetaminophen) reliably alleviate acute symptoms, with consideration not to take them for an extended period.

If inflammation occurs more than four times a year, doctors call it recurrent sinusitis; in this case, cortisone nasal sprays are used to reduce inflammation. This also applies if allergies are the cause.

Surgery

If symptoms persist, surgery may be beneficial, where the doctor expands the narrow passages between the sinuses and the nose to reduce mucus buildup.

Chronic sinusitis is treated similarly to the recurrent type, cortisone nasal sprays are also used in this case, and nasal irrigation with saline solutions can significantly alleviate symptoms. In some cases, antibiotics may also be tried, and if all these measures fail, surgery remains the last resort.
