Khaberni - From the Umayyad Mosque and on the occasion of one year since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shar`, today (Monday), revealed a gift from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Al-Shar` said: "After our first visit to Saudi Arabia, Prince Mohammed bin Salman honored us with a gift of a piece of the Kaaba's covering... and we chose to place this piece in the Umayyad Mosque."

Al-Shar` arrived at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus this morning amid a large presence of worshippers who headed to various mosques in Syria to commemorate the ‘Dawn of Syria's Liberation’ and the overthrow of the Assad regime.

Al-Shar` appeared wearing his military uniform, which he wore during his leadership of the military operations, due to its symbolism and connection to the memory. He delivered a speech from the pulpit of the Umayyad Mosque, affirming his commitment to preserve Syria from north to south.

Syrians are commemorating today, Monday, the first anniversary of the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad and his authoritarian rule, while the state struggles to achieve stability and recovery after a war that lasted for years.

Official celebrations are scheduled to take place in Umayyad Square in the capital, Damascus, which has already filled with jubilant crowds in preparation for December 8th. Celebrations will also take place in other locations across the country.

Assad fled to Russia a year ago when the opposition, led by the current President Ahmed Al-Shar`, took over Damascus and overthrew him after a war that lasted more than 13 years, which erupted following an uprising against his rule.

Several areas in Syria have been celebrating for several days, as the streets of Hama were filled with thousands last Friday waving the new Syrian flag to commemorate the day when militants led by the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham group took control of the city during their rapid advance towards Damascus.
