The Artificial Intelligence Race The slowdown in the growth of ChatGPT gives Gemini a chance to take the lead

Khaberni - New data from Sensor Tower showed that the growth of ChatGPT users began to slow, despite maintaining its global leadership position.

The artificial intelligence app from "OpenAI" still accounts for half of the smart robot app downloads on mobile phones, in addition to 55% of the monthly active users worldwide.

However, the main competitor, Gemini, is moving at a faster pace, whether in terms of download numbers or in the growth of active users or even in the time users spend within the app, according to a report published by "TechCrunch".

This acceleration in adopting Gemini may narrow the gap between it and ChatGPT, which has recently worried "OpenAI", especially after the "Red Code" memo issued by the CEO, Sam Altman, calling for a focus on improving artificial intelligence capabilities in areas such as personalization, reliability, and image generation.

Continuous growth but at a different pace
Although the race has not yet been decided, both apps continue to record significant growth rates.

ChatGPT has achieved an annual increase of 180% in the number of active users until November 2025, while Gemini has grown by 170% during the same period.

But comparing the growth over the last quarter reveals the difference:

The number of globally active ChatGPT users increased by only about 6% from August to November, reaching 810 million users—a sign that some see as the beginning of the application reaching market saturation.

In contrast, the number of Gemini users jumped by about 30% during the same period, driven by the launch of the new image generation model "Nano Banana" that attracted wide attention.

Data from "Sensor Tower" showed that the number of Gemini users on Android directly has now equaled twice the number of users of the standalone app, a strong point for Google, especially in markets dominated by Android.

Gemini's share of the artificial intelligence app market has increased by three percentage points over the past seven months, while ChatGPT lost three points in just the last four months.

New competitors enter the battle
The pressure on ChatGPT was not only from "Google", as other platforms such as "Perplexity" and "Claude" also recorded massive growth of 370% and 190% respectively in 2025.

As for downloads, ChatGPT recorded an annual increase of 85%, but it remained less than the market average of 110%.

Meanwhile, "Perplexity" and Gemini recorded growth rates of 215% and 190% respectively.

The time users of the Gemini app spend has more than doubled in recent months, reaching 11 minutes a day in November—a 120% increase since March, also driven by the popularity of "Nano Banana".

In contrast, the time users of ChatGPT spend only increased by 6%, and even decreased by 10% in November compared to July.

Can "OpenAI" turn the equation around?
Despite the notable progress of Gemini, the data suggests that this growth is largely linked to the success of the Nano Banana model.

This means that "OpenAI" could quickly regain its growth pace if it releases new technologies that have a similar impact.
