Khaberni - The Faculty of Law at Petra University hosted former Minister, Professor Yasera Ghosheh, in an awareness lecture titled: "Alternative Sanctions in Jordanian Legislation".
The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Ali Al-Dabbas, said that the faculty is keen on implementing extracurricular activities due to their role in refining the legal personality of students, adding that meetings with national figures prepare students for real-life requirements and the job market through benefiting from their accumulated experiences.
Ghosheh reviewed the concept of alternative sanctions as judicial measures that replace custodial sentences in specified cases, explaining that their application aims to reform the convicted, spare them the negative social effects of imprisonment, reduce overcrowding in reform centers, and lessen the financial burden on the state.
She explained that alternative punishments include unpaid community service, electronic monitoring, and banning from visiting specified places, noting that the law excludes major felonies and serious crimes, such as terrorism and sexual violence, from the application of these alternatives.
The lecture featured an open discussion where Ghosheh answered the students' inquiries. The meeting was attended by the Dean's Assistant for Student Affairs, the teacher Heba Al-Muhaisen, and several members of the faculty’s teaching staff.
