Khaberni - The United Nations Children's Fund "UNICEF" urged the Sudanese government and the international community to intensify efforts to protect the lives of children amid escalating conflict and climate shocks in the country.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, following a visit to South Sudan, stated that more than 2.1 million children under the age of five are at risk of malnutrition, and 9.3 million children - three-quarters of the population - need life-saving humanitarian support. Nearly 1.3 million refugees and returnees fleeing the war in Sudan have reached the south of the country, increasing the pressure on the scarce resources of water, food, and medical services.
Russell pointed out that the impact of the conflict and climate shocks is creating "a storm of complete suffering for children in South Sudan, in an already risky context."
