Schools were closed in Athens which was swept by a strong storm that also affected other parts of Greece, causing floods that submerged roads and disrupted traffic.

Kostas Tsigas, a member of the Fire Management Union, stated that the most affected area, the western side of Greater Athens, received "tons" of rain that blocked the roads with debris.

The storm temporarily closed the highway leading to the city of Corinth.

Tsigas added on public television that military vehicles were called in to clear the roads.

The storm peaked on Thursday when authorities had to cancel a European basketball league match between Olympiacos Piraeus and Fenerbahce of Turkey.

The National Observatory of Athens recorded a total of 245 mm of rain between Thursday and Friday in west Athens.

Nikos Chrysoulis, Deputy Mayor of Athens for Climate Affairs, told the radio that "the phenomenon is very severe, but so far, we have recorded no significant damage in Athens."
