Khaberni - The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned that Sudan is facing an imminent danger of another wave of atrocities amidst escalating violent fighting in the Kordofan Region between the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces, and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North.
A statement from Türk's office reported acts of retaliatory killings, arbitrary arrests, kidnappings, and forced recruitment, including children, and the detention of many civilians on charges of "collaborating" with opposing parties as concerns grow over the use of divisive hate speech, which may fuel violence.
The High Commissioner stated, "It is truly shocking to see history repeat itself in Kordofan shortly after the horrific events in El Fasher," adding that “the international community stood united then, vehemently condemning the barbaric violations and destruction, and we must not allow Kordofan to suffer the same fate as El Fasher.”
Türk said, "We cannot be silent in the face of another man-made disaster," adding that "the fighting must end immediately, and life-saving aid must be allowed to reach those facing famine."
