Sunderland took the lead with a goal by the Moroccan Shams El Din Talbi in the 67th minute, and the Reds rectified the situation with an own goal by Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele, who mistakenly scored in his own net in the 81st minute.
Liverpool achieved their first draw in the league this season to raise their points to 22 in the eighth position, while Sunderland remained in sixth place with 23 points, trailing Crystal Palace in fifth by goal difference.
