Khaberni - Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammed Al-Khilayleh confirmed that the recent amendments to the law pertaining to the imprisonment of the insolvent in alimony cases was a result of in-depth studies and reviews of past experiences.
Al-Khilayleh emphasized that imprisonment is not an end in itself, noting, "It is not a means to undermine the rights of women or to diminish the alimony rights of children and wives."
He explained that imprisoning someone merely for struggling to pay alimony, despite not having committed any prior criminal offense, could lead to counterproductive results that exacerbate the problem instead of solving it.
Among these results are: depriving the children of their father and branding the convicted individual with a criminal record that subsequently prevents him from obtaining a job, thereby cutting off the necessary means to settle the debt.
Al-Khilayleh pointed out that the alternative to imprisonment, represented by the "electronic bracelet," will enable the individual to work and commit to paying alimony without being tarnished with a criminal record.
He affirmed that the alimony fund will continue to cover the entitlements of the wife or children in case of financial difficulties, ensuring the rights reach their rightful owners directly.
