Khaberni - The American President Donald Trump and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said they discussed trade, economic issues, and the fight against organized crime during a phone call.
In remarks to journalists at the White House, Trump said he also discussed sanctions with Lula, apparently referring to the American administration's targeting of the Brazilian judiciary over a criminal case against the former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Trump mentioned that he had a "great conversation" with Lula. "We talked about trade and sanctions, because as you know, I imposed sanctions on them related to certain events that occurred," he said.
In a later post on social media, Trump said he looks forward to seeing Lula and talking with him soon, adding that "many good things will come from this new partnership!"
The Presidential Palace in Brazil stated that Lula thanked Trump for his decision to cancel the additional tariffs on Brazilian exports, including coffee and beef, and added that Brazil is looking to make progress in talks on products that are still affected by the tariffs.
Trump last month canceled customs tariffs of 40% on a number of Brazilian food products, which also included cocoa and fruits.
Trump announced these tariffs in July to punish Brazil for the prosecution of Bolsonaro, an ally of the American president.
During the 40-minute call on Tuesday, which the Presidential Palace in Brazil described as "very productive," Lula also emphasized the urgent need to enhance cooperation with the United States in combating international organized crime.
