Khaberni - The European Council announced on Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with the European Parliament on phasing out Russian gas imports by 2027 as part of efforts aimed at ending dependence on Russian energy resources.
The agreement will include a legally binding gradual ban on imports of liquefied natural gas and pipeline gas from Russia, with a complete ban on both by the end of 2026 and autumn of 2027, respectively.
As of October, Russia's share of European Union gas imports was 12% after having represented 45% before its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with countries including Hungary, France, and Belgium continuing to receive Russian gas.
