Khaberni - South Korean company Samsung, on Tuesday, revealed its first tri-fold smartphone in an attempt to enhance its position in a sector of the phone market where competition is expected to intensify.

The phone is named "Galaxy Z TriFold" and its launch represents Samsung's attempt to establish a foothold in a category where Chinese companies are making significant advancements.

However, this move comes as analysts say that foldable devices will not achieve widespread use at this time due to their high prices and production challenges, according to "Reuters".

The new tri-fold phone is priced at about 3.59 million won ($2440.17) and can be unfolded into a display measuring 253.1 millimeters (10 inches) comprising three panels, making it about 25% larger than Samsung's latest foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Alex Lim, executive vice president and head of sales and marketing in Korea for Samsung, said: "I believe the foldable device market will continue to grow, and the TriFold device, in particular, can serve as a catalyst for greater growth in key parts of this sector."

The TriFold model, made in South Korea, will be launched in the local market on December 12, and will be released in China, Singapore, Taiwan, and the UAE before the end of the year.

It is expected to start rolling out in the United States in the early first quarter of next year.

The device includes the largest battery in Samsung's flagship phone category and supports ultra-fast charging technology, which allows the phone to charge to 50% in 30 minutes.

Lim said that the prices of memory chips and other components are experiencing a sharp rise, making pricing the device "a tough decision".
