Bangladesh Issues New Sentence to Sheikh Hasina

Khaberni - A court in the capital of Bangladesh has sentenced the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison and her niece, British Member of Parliament for the Labour Party, Tulip Siddiq, to two years in a corruption case.

Robiul Alam, judge of the special court in Dhaka, explained that Hasina misused her power as Prime Minister, while Siddiq was proven to have corruptly influenced her aunt to help her mother acquire a piece of government project land.

Siddiq's mother, Sheikh Rahana, was sentenced to seven years in prison and considered the main party in the case.

The case concerns the "Purbachal New Town" project located in a suburb of Dhaka.

Siddiq, representing the Hampstead and Highgate constituency in the British Parliament in London, has denied the allegations against her.

The new verdict comes just days after she was convicted and sentenced to death in a case of crimes against humanity during protests in 2024. Additionally, the court sentenced Hasina to seven years in prison in each case, in her absence, while also sentencing her son and daughter in related files.

It is noted that Sheikh Hasina currently lives in exile in India since being overthrown following a mass uprising last year, while her trials on several cases have been conducted in absentia.
