Khaberni - The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it carried out a joint military operation with the Syrian Ministry of Interior targeting more than 15 warehouses and weapon depots belonging to the Islamic State in southern Syria and the countryside of Damascus.
CENTCOM stated in a statement yesterday, Sunday, that the US forces participated with units from the Syrian Interior, between November 24 and 27, in the destruction of the stores through airstrikes and field detonation operations.
It clarified that the targeted warehouses contained mortar ammunition, rockets, multi-caliber machine guns, anti-tank mines, and materials used in manufacturing explosive devices.
US CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper stated that the joint operations "aim to prevent the Islamic State from regaining its strength".
He added, "This successful operation has further weakened the organization’s offensive capability, and we will not allow ISIS (Islamic State) to reach a level that poses a threat to the United States and its allies".
This operation follows the announcement by the US embassy in Damascus, on November 11, that Syria has officially joined the international coalition against the Islamic State, led by Washington since 2014.
The embassy then stated that "Syria has become the 90th partner in the coalition" and described the move as "a pivotal moment in Syria's history and in the global fight against terrorism".
It is noted that the international coalition against the Islamic State, in which dozens of countries have participated since its establishment, has carried out a wide range of military operations against the organization in Syria and Iraq over the past years. Whereas the Syrian government was not a party to it before its recent announcement of joining.
