Khaberni - The Energy and Mineral Resources Parliamentary Committee recommended exempting subscribers from the electricity reconnection fees for the first time (for free), with a fixed fee of (3) dinars for subsequent times, as part of the committee's commitment to alleviate the financial burdens on citizens.
This was during its first meeting held today, Sunday, chaired by MP Dr. Ayman Abuhania, which was dedicated to discussing the committee's work mechanism and its plan for the upcoming phase.
Abuhania confirmed that the energy sector is one of the main pillars of the national economic security, which necessitates adopting an approach based on effective planning and transparent oversight, involving all relevant entities to ensure enhanced energy security and improved service quality, in line with the comprehensive modernization requirements and the directives of His Majesty the King aimed at developing the sector and enhancing its performance efficiency.
He pointed out that the committee will operate according to a clear methodology that includes legislative and oversight aspects, ensuring the monitoring of energy and mineral resources files in the kingdom and enhancing the parliamentary role in supervising government performance and stimulating investment in this vital sector.
Regarding the legislative aspect, Abuhania and committee members MPs: Engineer Jamal Qamoh, Engineer Talal Al-Nsour, Engineer Rakin Abuhania, Engineer Naseem Al-Abbadi, and Dr. Islam Al-Azazmeh reviewed the most significant bills referred to them, including: the Gas Law for the year 2025 and the law ratifying the implementation agreement for the assessment, development, and exploitation of copper and associated minerals in the Abu Khshaiba area between the Ministry of Energy and Wadi Araba Minerals Company.
The committee affirmed that it will hold a series of consultative meetings, hosting relevant parties, stakeholders, and experts before starting to discuss any bill to ensure drafting contemporary legislation that enhances the tikafi security and supports investment in mining.
As for the oversight aspect, the committee approved an oversight program that includes holding regular meetings with relevant governmental and private entities, in addition to organizing field visits to provinces and institutions related to the energy and mining sector, in order to closely examine the work reality and discuss the challenges and obstacles at field sites.
Prominent entities that the committee will formally meet include: the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, mining companies, the Jordanian Electricity Company, and renewable energy companies.
The committee noted that its plan for the next phase would focus on achieving a number of goals, most notably: enhancing energy security by ensuring diversification of sources and achieving supply sustainability, developing electrical infrastructure to improve network efficiency and distribution, encouraging investment in renewable energy to increase its contribution to the national energy mix, exploiting mineral wealth and activating transformational industries to increase added value and enhance Jordan's position on the regional and international green hydrogen map, reviewing and updating legislation related to renewable, wind, and solar energy, supporting small and medium-sized projects in the renewable energy sector.
The committee also discussed the importance of improving energy consumption efficiency across sectors, addressing electrical loss, and enhancing regional cooperation in electrical connectivity projects, especially in light of the new regional changes.
The committee also confirmed that it will discuss a number of files and axes during its upcoming meetings, including: the comprehensive strategy for the energy sector 2020-2030 and its implementation plan, projects of renewable energy, natural resources, petroleum derivatives, the Liquefied Petroleum Gas port project in Aqaba, developments in oil and oil shale exploration and Risha gas, in addition to discussing strategies for green hydrogen and signed agreements in this area.
Abuhania confirmed at the end of the meeting that the committee will work in a spirit of partnership and integration with the government and private sector and experts, aiming to develop the energy and mineral resources sector and enhance its performance, to safeguard the national interest.
