Khaberni - Last year, South Korea recorded a record increase in single-person households amidst a decline in birth rates and an acceleration of aging in the country.
Data from the Ministry of Social Welfare in South Korea showed that the number of single-person households reached 8.05 million by the end of 2024, accounting for 36.1% of total households, after a steady rise from 5.2 million in 2015 to 6.64 million in 2020, exceeding the 30% threshold for the first time.
Estimates predict that this upward trend will continue, reaching 8.55 million households by 2027, 9.71 million by 2037, and 9.94 million by 2042, at a time when the number of people aged 65 and over has surpassed the 10 million mark, officially pushing the country into the stage of a super-aged society with the elderly population exceeding 20% of the total population.
