Khaberni - The "New York Times" reported on Friday, citing informed sources, that U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone conversation with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro, last week and discussed the possibility of holding a meeting between them in the United States.
The newspaper added that there are currently no plans to hold such a meeting, which, if it were to happen, would be the first-ever meeting between the current Venezuelan leader and any U.S. president.
The news of the phone call comes at a time when Trump continues to employ harsh rhetoric towards Venezuela, with constant references to the possibility of resorting to diplomacy instead of force.
The Trump administration has described Maduro as an "illegitimate leader" who leads a drug-trafficking gang known as "Cartel de los Soles", a claim denied by Caracas.
Since early September, the U.S. government has been bombing what it says are boats carrying drugs coming from Venezuela and other countries in Latin America.
Yesterday, on Thursday, Trump reiterated his previous threats to start bombing ground targets in Venezuela. He told reporters, "Things on the ground are easier, and that will start very soon."
