Khaberni - Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi and the Vice-President of the European Commission and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaya Kalas chaired the tenth regional forum of the Foreign Ministers of the Member States in the Union for the Mediterranean, held today in Barcelona, hosted by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, with the participation of foreign ministers and heads of delegations of the member states of the Union and representatives of European and regional institutions concerned.
Safadi emphasized the importance of the forum, especially with the continuing regional crises, in order to open serious prospects between the member states on both shores of the Mediterranean to discuss shared challenges and enhance security, stability, and cooperation in the region.
Safadi noted that this year's forum coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the Barcelona process, and said it is unfortunate that the Barcelona promise of peace, prosperity, and cooperation shattered due to a brutal occupation that revealed its inhumane nature in the most horrific ways during two years of genocide in Gaza.
Safadi pointed to the dangerous Israeli escalation and attacks in the occupied West Bank, noting the displacement of 32,000 Palestinians in recent days in the West Bank, ongoing settlement expansion, land confiscation, and the stranglehold on the Palestinian economy which undermines the chances of peace and weakens the efforts towards a two-state solution.
Safadi reaffirmed that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a fair and comprehensive peace that ensures security and stability in the region according to international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Safadi welcomed Syria's re-entry into the Union for the Mediterranean during the meeting, reaffirming the need to support Syria in the reconstruction process based on principles that ensure its unity, sovereignty, security, and the integrity of its territories and citizens, and protect all the rights of the Syrians.
Safadi also participated in the ministerial meeting to launch the "Mediterranean Charter," with the participation of the Vice-President of the European Commission and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaya Kalas, and the European Commissioner for Mediterranean Affairs Dubravka Suica, along with foreign ministers and representatives of the European Union and southern neighboring countries, in Barcelona.
Safadi emphasized during the meeting the importance of adopting the Mediterranean Charter as an important document and a practical methodology for increasing cooperation that positively reflects on both shores of the Mediterranean, he mentioned that there is an action plan following the adoption of the Charter that the Kingdom will actively contribute to ensure its translation into real work that meets the aspirations of the peoples of the region.
Safadi held a joint press conference at the conclusion of the tenth regional forum of the Foreign Ministers of the Member States in the Union for the Mediterranean with the Vice-President of the European Commission and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaya Kalas, and the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, and the European Commissioner for Mediterranean Affairs Dubravka Suica, and the Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean Nasser Kamel.
Safadi stated at the conference that the Union for the Mediterranean is entering a new phase of its work after adopting a clear reform vision that defines practical priorities for implementing the Union's goals in promoting development and cooperation, and building cultural, economic, development bridges between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
