Throat inflammation Effective home remedies and others futile

Khaberni - Throat inflammation becomes more common at this time of the year, especially with the drop in temperatures, which pushes people to search for ways to relieve the pain and redness associated with it.

However, experts warn against relying on some commercial treatments that may be a waste of money and time.

The consumer rights organization Which? revealed that some products marketed as helping soothe throat inflammation "are not always necessary".

Professor Nirmal Kumar, a consultant in otolaryngology, affirmed that simple home remedies may be as effective as commercial products, saying: "You do not have to buy expensive treatments. Some simple measures you can take at home help alleviate symptoms."

Common treatments of little benefit:

Medicated lozenges: They can be replaced with any hard candy that can be sucked and relieves pain.

Antiseptic sprays: The British National Health Service indicates that there is little evidence of their efficacy alone.

Effective home remedies:

1. Gargling with warm salt water: It soothes and calms throat inflammation and reduces its duration. Add half a teaspoon of salt to 150 ml of warm water and gargle for 30 seconds three times a day. Not recommended for children.

2. Paracetamol or ibuprofen: Reduces pain and discomfort, and provides the same efficacy as branded types without the need to spend large amounts.

3. Candies and ice cream: Sucking a piece of hard candy or eating ice cream increases saliva production and hydrates the mouth, which temporarily relieves the pain. It is advised not to overdo it to avoid increased sugar and dental problems.

4. Honey and lemon drink: Helps smooth the throat and reduce itching, while maintaining the consumption of warm rather than very hot liquids.

Throat inflammation usually improves on its own within a week. But see a doctor if:

Your child under five is suffering from throat inflammation.

The inflammation has not improved after a week.

You are suffering from recurrent throat inflammation.

Alarming symptoms appeared such as the presence of a lump in the mouth or neck or a mouth ulcer that lasts more than 3 weeks.

Tips for prevention:

Reduce the risk of infection by following hygiene habits:

Wash hands well with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or cleaning the nose.

Use sanitizer containing 60% alcohol if water and soap are not available.

Cover the mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and dispose of it immediately.
