Khaberni - A court in Bangladesh, today, Thursday, sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 21 years in prison in 3 corruption files, as well as sentenced her son and daughter to 5 years in the same files.

A court in Dhaka convicted Hasina (78 years old) of illegally acquiring lands on the outskirts of Bangladesh's largest cities, at the end of a trial held in absentia.

The judge announced at the sentencing that "the behavior of the Prime Minister.. reveals a continuous inclination towards corruption, fueled by a sense of impunity, unlimited powers, and a clear greed for public properties".

Death Sentence

A court last week issued a death sentence to the former Prime Minister, who ruled the country with an iron fist since 2009, for her conviction of committing crimes against humanity based on her orders to the security forces to fire on protesters during the student uprising that ousted her in August 2024.

Hasina, who is outside the country, denied that she had given such orders, condemning "political motives" behind the sentence.

At least 1400 people died, most of them civilians according to the United Nations, during the popular protests led by students that forced Hasina to resign and leave the country on August 5, 2024, to seek refuge in neighboring India after 15 years of holding power.

Following the issuance of the death penalty against her, Dhaka requested her extradition to New Delhi, which reported yesterday, Wednesday, that the request "is under consideration".
