Khaberni - Back pain usually worsens during the winter season. What are the reasons for that?
To answer this question, German orthopedic doctor Lars Lorer explained that back pain worsens in winter for the following reasons:
• Lack of physical activity due to cold weather.
• Weight gain, usually due to overeating and reduced physical activity.
• Reduced exposure to sunlight in winter has a negative impact on the hormonal system; it causes a deterioration in mood, which increases the risk of depression, and this in turn makes the body more sensitive to pain, thus exacerbating back pain.
• Cold also plays a role, albeit a minor one, as muscles become stiffer and may cramp in low temperatures.
Measures to address back pain
To combat back pain during the winter, the German orthopedic doctor recommended taking the following measures:
• Engage in physical activities, such as walking, cycling, and Pilates exercises, in addition to taking the stairs instead of using the elevator.
• Warmth also helps relieve back pain, as it relaxes the muscles and improves blood circulation. The body can be warmed by taking a warm bath or sauna bath, or massaging the back with a hot water bottle or hot water bag.
Consult a doctor
In any case, it is advisable to consult a doctor if the pain is very severe or if it persists for more than 4 to 6 weeks.
This also applies if the pain extends to the legs or arms, and also if sensory disturbances, paralysis, or instability in walking occur.
