Khaberni - Former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro has commenced serving a 27-year prison sentence after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction for plotting a coup.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes issued an order to start enforcing the punishment against Bolsonaro at the Brazilia Federal Police compound, where he has been detained since last Saturday.
The decision followed the publication of a document by the Supreme Court on Tuesday stating that Bolsonaro's conviction was final, leaving no possibility of filing any new appeal.
Bolsonaro, who is 70 years old, had been under house arrest since early August but was ordered to be detained provisionally due to "indications of a possible escape attempt" during a rally planned by his supporters last Saturday near his residence in the capital.
Judge de Moraes mentioned that Bolsonaro "deliberately and consciously tampered with electronic monitoring equipment," and burned his electronic bracelet.
In September, the Supreme Court convicted Bolsonaro of leading a "criminal organization" that conspired to ensure his "dictatorial retention in power" after his leftist opponent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won the October 2022 elections.
