Khaberni - The capital Amman witnessed on Tuesday a rise in water levels in some streets of the capital, after a brief period of heavy rain, according to the Amman Municipality.
Mohammad Al-Faouri, the Deputy City Manager for Districts and Environment at the Amman Municipality, explained in a statement on Tuesday that the municipality continuously works on cleaning the manholes and water channels across different seasons, noting that there are about 50,000 manholes designated for rainwater drainage in the capital, according to Al-Mamlaka.
He said that the rainstorm on Tuesday recorded three main observations, the most significant being the rise in water levels in the Shmeisani area due to high pressure on a major sewage line, caused by connecting building gutters to drainage manholes.
He added that the municipality also dealt with soil erosions in the Badr area, which affected one of the lower roads, and it was immediately addressed.
He confirmed that the manholes are designed to absorb specific amounts of water, and any unauthorized connection overloads them, exceeding their capacity and causing water levels to rise and disrupting natural drainage.
Faouri revealed that the Amman Municipality will soon approve a new system that involves imposing financial fines on anyone proven to be connecting building gutters to sewage drainage manholes and water channels.
