Khaberni - A recent American study has revealed that even occasional limited smoking can cause serious health problems for the heart.

Researchers at several American research institutions, including the Johns Hopkins Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, state that smoking between two to five cigarettes a day increases the risks of heart attacks and death.

The researchers analyzed the results of 22 research papers that followed the health status of more than 300,000 adults over 20 years.

The results of the study, published in the scientific journal «PLoS Medicine», show that individuals who smoke between two to five cigarettes a day have a 50 percent higher chance of developing heart disease and a 60 percent higher chance of dying compared to non-smokers.

The study clarified that the level of risk significantly decreases after quitting smoking for 10 years, although the health damages from smoking continue for up to 30 years after quitting.

Researchers involved in the study stated that "it is noticeable that smoking involves significant risks to the cardiovascular system, even when taken in limited doses."

In statements to the «HealthDay» website dedicated to medical research, they added that "the results of this study highlight the importance of smoking cessation and abstinence programs."
