Khaberni - The Afar region in northeastern Ethiopia witnessed the eruption of the "Hayli Goby" volcano, resulting in violent tremors in the surrounding areas, and a wide dust cloud in several provinces in Yemen.
The head of the Earthquake Department at the Addis Ababa University Institute of Geophysics clarified to local media that the volcano is one of the most active in the country. He added that the lower part of the Danakil Depression is a geologically active area.
Researchers expect the lava flow in the area to continue, with the possibility of varying intensity of eruptions, urging nearby communities to take necessary precautions.
Several Yemeni provinces are experiencing a wide wave of dust and volcanic ash coming from Ethiopia after the eruption of the Hayli Goby volcano.
According to meteorological centers, the active winds have contributed to the spread of ash and sulfur dioxide gas across the Red Sea, affecting the provinces of Hodeidah, Ibb, Dhamar, Sana'a, and the coastal and central areas, before extending east towards Hadhramaut.
Citizens have observed a clear change in the color of the sky, a decrease in visibility levels, in addition to the fall of fine black ash that caused widespread concern due to its negative impact on the respiratory system and eyes, especially among children, the elderly, and patients with asthma and allergies.
A delegation of geologists has started heading to the area to deal with possible environmental and geological implications.
Scenes of Lava from the Ethiopian "Hayli Goby" Volcano.. What is their Reality?
Social media platforms have circulated video clips in the past hours claiming to show the scattering of flaming lava from the "Hayli Goby" volcano located in the Afar region in northeastern Ethiopia, following its sudden eruption on Sunday.
According to the claims, the scenes were captured at the moment of the volcanic lava's surge and its glow in the night sky, which caused a broad wave of interaction and speculations about its danger to the health of the residents in the surrounding areas.
The "X" platform witnessed a widespread dissemination of a video showing a strong volcanic eruption, claimed by publishers to be a direct documentation of the lava rising from the Hayli Goby volcano during the night hours, prompting many to repost and circulate it without verifying its source or timing.
Upon reverse search of the video source, it was found that it was not in Ethiopia, but rather originated from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, USA, according to Al Jazeera.
An older version of the video was posted on the "Reddit" platform on October 24, last year, and the US Geological Survey posted on the "Instagram" platform four days ago a video of Kilauea volcano showing the chronological sequence of its eruption during October, showing a clear match between it and the alleged video from Ethiopia.
Another account on the "X" platform posted two clips, the first showing widespread lava spread in the form of blazing trails, and the second showing an abundant flow of lava from the earth's core.
The account wrote, "More than 80,000 Ethiopians are fleeing the Afar region, due to the expansion of volcanic lava with increased seismic activity around Mount Dovan volcano, which could lead to a disaster."
