Khaberni - Bloating is a common sensation that can be caused by several factors, including the food you eat and underlying health issues. This can be exacerbated by excessive consumption of sweets or snacks, but there is an unexpected cause of this troublesome bloating, which is related to the amount of air that is swallowed, which can occur due to common habits.
Swallowing air and bloating occurs as a result of regularly chewing gum
Dr. Lawrence Cunningham, a general practitioner in the "UK Care Guide", says: "From my experience, chewing gum can contribute to bloating, even if you do not swallow it. When you chew gum, you tend to swallow more air, which can accumulate in your digestive system and cause bloating."
He continues "I have seen this happen with people who chew gum regularly as a habit. Additionally, some sugar-free gum contains artificial sweeteners like sorbitol or xylitol, which can cause indigestion and bloating for some."
Eating food quickly
According to "Surry Life", eating food too quickly is a habit that leads to the swallowing of excess air.
Dr. Cunningham advises, "I always recommend taking your time to chew your food well and enjoy every bite. Not only does this reduce the swallowing of air, but it also helps the body break down and digest the food more effectively."
Cunningham adds other factors that can exacerbate bloating, including "eating large meals shortly before bedtime, adopting a poor posture while eating, and not drinking enough water, all of which can aggravate symptoms."
He continues, "Alongside this, stress is another major factor that exacerbates bloating."
Cunningham advises "Maintaining body hydration and engaging in regular physical activity are crucial for managing stress and promoting digestive health."
