Khaberni - The Greater Amman Municipality crews removed more than 1,450 concrete barriers and over 10,400 plastic barriers and cones from streets and sidewalks, obstructing the flow of traffic and pedestrians in various areas of the capital, Amman, according to the Deputy City Director for District and Environmental Affairs at the Municipality, Mohammad Al-Faouri.

Al-Faouri said on Saturday that the campaign began after notifying the owners of commercial establishments and those exploiting sidewalks and streets about the necessity of removing obstacles in front of their shops, noting that the Municipality confiscated the obstacles if they did not comply with the requests directed to them.

He confirmed that repeated violations lead to issuing fines based on the nuisance prevention system practiced in the Greater Amman Municipality, explaining that the campaign includes deterrent measures involving the imposition of financial penalties on those who re-place obstacles in areas that have been cleared, aiming to maintain the cleanliness of roads and ensure smooth traffic flow and a safe traffic environment for pedestrians and vehicles, according to Al-Mamlaka.

He added that the campaign significantly contributed to facilitating traffic movement, as some roads had three lanes but suffered from the closure of a whole lane due to obstacles, which negatively affected the flow of traffic; with the removal of obstacles, the traffic conditions improved noticeably.

Al-Faouri emphasized that the campaign aims to reclaim pedestrians' right to safely use sidewalks, stressing that encroachment on sidewalks is completely unacceptable, as is the case with encroachment on roads designated for vehicles.

Al-Faouri pointed out that the campaign had achieved its goals in improving the traffic environment and raising citizens' awareness of the importance of preserving the rights of both pedestrians and vehicles alike.
